We provide bespoke advanced/defensive driver training to companies and private individuals using our national network of DVSA-registered advanced driving instructors.
Our advanced and defensive driving courses are designed to help a driver:
- Iron out any bad habits
- Improve concentration and observation
- Have an improved level of car control
- Improve vehicle fuel efficiency (Eco-Safe Driving)
- Have a more positive view of safe driving
- Develop a better understanding of how to deal with driving in adverse weather
These are just a few things we can help a driver with. Our courses are designed and based on the specific needs of a motorist. So we can offer a general advanced/defensive course for a team of drivers – or a more bespoke session if required.
Remember – All of our on-road driving courses are bespoke to your own needs. This relates to both business and private customers.
For all our bespoke driving courses in Ripon, we provide training on a range of roads and different areas, which can include:
Motorway training – The A1 motorway lies to the east of Ripon and is linked via the A61 Hutton Bank Road. Using routes encompassing fast roads and motorways, we can create a tailored course for any driver looking to increase their motorway driving confidence. Many people who can drive quite confidently on urban or rural roads fear motorways due to the higher speeds and multiple lanes and often avoid them in favour of slower roads, constantly adding a lot of time to their journey. We can help drivers of all ages and experience with safer motorway driving.
Rural Roads – Ripon is set in a very rural area in North Yorkshire, and many miles of minor B roads and lanes surround the city. The roads with the most accidents are the B6265, Studley Road and the Kirkby Road travelling west, the Dishforth Road to the east, and the Knaresborough Road south. Many accidents in rural areas can be quite severe, and many may have been avoided with better forward vision and understanding of the consequences of excess speed in quiet areas with few speed cameras. Around every corner could be a possible threat, from oncoming vehicles, horse riders or cyclists and loose animals in farming communities, so it is vital that drivers hold back when needed and observe.
Urban Training – Although Ripon is a relatively small city, it has a bustling road network that has seen many accidents, which may have been avoided with better urban driving skills. Patience is one of the main requirements of urban driving as the roads can be very congested, especially in rush hours, as most drivers are hurrying to get to their destination. By going back to basics with significant all-around mirror observations, indicating in good time to alert other drivers of your intentions, and by learning to understand the actions of other drivers can improve your levels of road safety.
During a session, we typically look at the following:
* Forward planning and observation
* Speed Awareness
* Developing a positive attitude towards safer driving
* How to become a safer driver on all roads
* Car or van control (gears, steering, foot controls, signals)
* Rules of the road
* Dealing with road rage
* Reversing and manoeuvres
* Dealing with adverse weather
* Town and urban defensive driving
* Driving in heavy traffic and allowing adequate space
* Skid control theory and learning what causes skids
* Eco-safe driving (effective use of speed, gears, and planning)
* Anticipation – Learning to see and not just look
* Understanding other road users and their intentions
