Our minds create things know as schemas. Schemas, related to driving, are in simple terms, a learned route or process for doing something. We have schemas for almost all tasks in life, such as making a cup of coffee, or getting ready in the morning.

Once we learn to drive we apply schemas to many aspects of driving, such as dealing with junctions, turning, using the gears etc. This automated process is a great testament to the human mind.

However, applying an automatic response/procedure to something which has many variables is a reason why accidents can and do happen. How many times have you been doing a driving manoeuvre and something unexpectedly caught you out?

How to stay safe:

Be aware that our minds do create these schemas – be aware of when they can get you into trouble.

Always take care and concentrate – don’t always assume to junction is clear, or its safe to pull out.
