Work related safety can
only become effectively managed within the workplace if it is given
due consideration and has real focus and time given to it. There
are four key outlines which need to be addressed to ensure successful
management of road safety in the workplace:
Responsibility:
It is important to understand
who has the responsibility for road related road safety in your
organisation. To also ensure success, it will also need “buy
in” from the top down to ensure it is driven forward and kept
as a priority within the organisation.
Policy:
Does your health and safety
policy statement cover work-related road safety? Your policy
should be written down if you employ five or more people.
Organisation, Structure
& Control:
In larger organisations, your aim is to ensure that you have an
organisational
structure that allows communication across departments with different
responsibilities for work-related road safety.
Systems & Monitoring:
Would you consider that
you have effective and robust systems in place in your organisation
to ensure your work-related road safety policy is adhered to? Also
does this system effectively track the service schedules for fleet
vehicles? It is also important to have a clearly defined monitoring
system which allows you to record any employee who has either had
an accident, motoring offenses, which could possibly impact on their
personal risk associated with work-related road safety.
