| Advanced
Driving Tests - How hard are they really....?
The
general public tend to have little knowledge of advanced driving.
Fewer still know about the range of tests available.
Due
to this very fact, we have outlined the advanced driving tests currently
available, and ranked them - so you know exactly how hard the test
is and what it involves.
There
are tests which we have not mentioned such as the Diploma in Driving
Instruction etc, as these cover more than just a test of driving
ability and so are not included.
We
have detailed each test below, starting from the easiest.

Pass
Plus |
| Difficulty |
Easy
- any qualified driver can pass. |
| Notes |
An
excellent introduction to the world of advanced driving. This
course is aimed at drivers who have qualified within the last
12 months, although any driver can take the course.
The
purpose of the course is to expose novice drivers to motorway
driving, and slightly more advanced methods of driving, they
may not have developed during their L driver training.
The
Pass Plus course is not a test as such as you can't fail,
you will either achieve or exceed each module. When you have
reached the standard (normally after 6 hours training) you
will be awarded a certificate. We conduct Pass Plus courses,
for more info please click here.

Institute
of Advanced Motorists (I.A.M) |
| Difficulty |
Medium
- 90% of drivers should pass with training. |
| Notes |
The
I.A.M are probably the best known advanced driving organisation
in the UK. Their test is designed for motorists, typically
with many years experience to improve their driving by introducing
them to Roadcraft and The System of Car Control.
You
can take this test after at least 3-months driving experience,
although most have far more than this. Almost all drivers
will be able to pass this test after around 6-10 hours training. |

DIAmond
Advanced Test |
| Difficulty |
Medium/Hard |
| Notes |
The
DIAmond Advanced Test is different to the I.A.M test as it
follows the DSA (Driving Standards Agency) style of driving
- basically the way you need to drive to pass the L test.
To
pass the Learner test you need to make no more than 15 minor
faults. To pass this test, you need to make no more than 6
minor faults. This test is based on the same standard driving
instructors are tested on as part of their qualifying exams!
Although
impossible to show on this web page, this test really sits
above Bronze and Silver RoSPA test (see below) but not quite
at Gold level, but very near.

| Course |
RoSPA
Advanced Drivers & Riders |
| Difficulty |
Medium
(Bronze) Quite Hard (Silver)
Hard (Gold) |
| Notes |
Similar
to the I.A.M test as it is based on Roadcraft. However, the
main difference is your test is graded Bronze, Silver and
Gold. You will also need to be re-tested every three years.
Bronze
is considered an I.A.M pass, while a silver award is for the
more able drivers. Gold is hard to get and is for drivers
who display flair throughout the test. Gold standard drivers
would be considered good enough to succeed on a class one
type police advanced test.

DIAmond
Special Test |
| Difficulty |
Very
Hard |
| Notes |
Identical
to the DIAmond Advanced Test in that it follows the DSA way
of driving (MSM, always indicate at junctions etc..) but on
this test, you need to make no more than 2 minor faults.
The
test also lasts 90 minutes (compared to the 60 minutes for
the DIAmond Advanced Test) and to add to that, you also need
to give a full 15 minute driving commentary on what you are
seeing and how you are planning.
If
you pass this test, you can be confident that your driving
ability on the road is far superior to people who have passed
the I.A.M test, and light years ahead of the average driver. |

DSA
Cardington Special Test - Grade A |
| Difficulty |
Very
Hard |
| Notes |
This
test is almost identical to the DIAmond Special Test. However,
is only allowed to be taken by ADIs (Approved Driving Instructors).
At the end of the test, you will be awarded a Grade D, C,
B or A. Grades D to B range from and I.A.M pass to RoSPA Gold
(Grade B).
However,
to be classed as the highest test available we are only including
Grade A passes. Some people may argue that the DIAmond Special
Test is harder. However, as this is only open to ADIs we fail
to see how something like this can be easier than a test available
to the general public.
Like
with the DIAmond Special Test you are only allowed 2 driving
faults, although we suspect that the examiners will be slightly
harder at marking on this test.

What
about HPC?
There
is of course HPC. This has not been included here as although it
goes up to a very high standard, is focused partly on track driving
as well as road driving. However, for those interested in this,
their road test would be slightly above RoSPA Gold. Although HPC
is mainly a privately owned driving club.
